Injuries to ChildrenPersonal InjuryAre Defective Toy Injuries on the Rise?

December 19, 2014by Aaron Allison

As we get closer to the holiday season, we would like to inform our readers of a sharp rise in toy-related injuries. The most recent edition of Clinical Pediatrics reports that injuries from toys have increased by 40 percent from 1990 to 2011.

On average, about every three minutes a toy hurts a child. More than half of these victims are under the age of six. This rise in injuries should be a call to action to make toy companies more accountable for injuries that their toys cause.

Why Are Toys Recalled?

Defective toys are recalled all the time. However, it is not always easy to know if a toy you have bought for your child has been recalled. The following are common traits of dangerous toys and why they should be recalled:

  • Defective design or manufacturing defect
  • Failure to honor warranties
  • Flammable or explosive toys
  • Inadequate warnings to deter choking hazards, strangulation due to straps cuts, etc.
  • Improper labeling, such as grouping a product in the wrong age group for children
  • Incorrect instructions
  • Lead-based paint or the use of lead in a toy
  • Toys that can pinch the body

Toy defects are the source of many minor to severe injuries in children. We strongly recommend researching toys online before or after you buy them to see if there are any known hazards.
