Georgetown Bicyclist Killed in Fatal Round Rock Bike Accident

January 1, 2014by Aaron Allison

A man from Georgetown is dead following a fatal bicycle accident in Round Rock that occurred on December 17. Joseph Holan suffered critical injuries after a car collided with his bike as he traveled on southbound Interstate 35 near FM 1431 around 6:45 A.M.

According to KXAN, this bike ride from his home in Georgetown to his place of work in North Austin was common for the 44-year-old, as he rode the 20-mile commute each way every day.

Round Rock Police stated that the collision happened when a motorist attempted to change lanes, which caused the car to strike the rear of Holan’s bicycle. Investigators of the accident said that the area of road in which Holan was traveling on is not well lit, especially in the dark morning hours.

The driver involved in the accident, 34-year-old Travis Talley, told authorities that he simply did not see Holan before attempting to switch lanes. However, Holan’s bike was equipped with lights, and he was wearing a reflective vest and bike helmet at the time of the collision. Police are still investigating the bike crash and are looking into whether the bike lights were operational when the accident occurred.
