How Can We Raise Awareness on Protecting Motorcyclists?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that in 2012, there  were 4,957 motorcyclist fatalities in the United States. Additionally, there were 93,000 motorcyclist injuries during that same period.

Unfortunately, the high number of deaths and injuries for motorcyclists is due to drivers who are not paying attention to motorcycle riders around them.

It is important that our community raise awareness for motorcycle safety. We have discussed in previous posts the high risk and injury for motorcyclists. Riders on a motorcycle do not have the same physical protections of a passenger in a motor vehicle.

In Norfolk, England, a mom who lost her son in a catastrophic motorcycle accident is helping local police promote a new safety campaign for motorcycle safety.

According to ABC 13, Brenda Holmes’s son, David, was killed in 2013 when a car turned into his path while he rode is motorcycle. The driver admitted to police that he drove carelessly, which is why he did not see David traveling down the road when he turned in front of him.

To hit the point home in the public safety campaign, Brenda has given permission to release publicly the video of her son’s fatal collision that was recorded by his head mounted camera.

Although this video is controversial, Chief Inspector Chris Spinks said, “I don’t make any apologies for it being hard-hitting because the day and age we’re in now we have to up our game in the casualty reduction world to make sure that we get that message across.”

Our state of Texas may need to use similar “controversial” campaigns to get the attention of the motoring public.
