On Sunday, March 2, a high-speed police chase resulted in a car crash that caused the wrongful death of the fleeing car’s passenger and serious injuries to the driver. The driver faces felony manslaughter charges.
According to officials, a car believed to be in the crash passed a Travis County sheriff’s patrol sergeant traveling at over 100 miles per hour. The car, which was on the 3200 block of East Parmer Lane, proceeded onto Cameron Road, ran a red light and collided with another vehicle. At that time, the sergeant attempted to catch up to the vehicle, which was traveling over 115 miles per hour at that point.
The sergeant continued to pursue the vehicle until he found it wrecked in a field off of Cameron Road after an apparent impact with a utility pole. Officials say the driver likely lost control of the vehicle, collided with the utility pole, causing it to fall over and then continued driving into the field. The sergeant then saw the driver exit the vehicle and noticed a woman in the passenger’s seat. Shortly afterward, she was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Reckless drivers endanger not only themselves, but also their own passengers and everyone else on the road. This driver acted recklessly, which caused a hit-and-run accident to occur as well as fatal passenger injuries. This driver now faces criminal punishment and possibly civil liability from victims of both incidents.
