Owners of commercial property and businesses have a responsibility to ensure safety for their patrons. When they neglect to make their properties safe, people get injured.
Common causes of slip and fall accidents include:
- Poorly-maintained handrails and escalators
- Loose objects on the ground
- Wet floors and puddles
- Dimly lit stairwells
- Damaged floor tiles
Slip and fall accidents can result in serious personal injuries. A victim may suffer broken bones, strained muscles, a back injury and severe pain as a result of his or her fall.
New Program is Helping Older People Stay on Their Feet in Central Texas
KXAN recently reported that a Central Texas hospital is the first in the state to offer a new program aimed at keeping older people on their feet and out of the hospital.
As our loved ones get older, slip and fall accidents become more of a concern. At St. David’s Medical Center, program coordinator Sheila Dolbow and physical therapist Emily Edwards are bringing the “Stepping On” program to Central Texas, a program aiming to improve self-efficiency and educate older individuals about fall prevention techniques.
Techniques covered in the program are:
- Ways to stay safe while walking in the community
- Role of vision in keeping balance
- Strength and balance exercises
- How to cope with a fall
Dolbow and Edwards say the program has reduced falls by 31 percent among individuals 65-years-old and older. Classes will be available starting in the spring, and you can visit their website for more information.
