Sadly, a car near the University of Texas campus struck a child on May 15 in Austin.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, the accident occurred near the westbound lanes of East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Interstate 35 at around 8:40 a.m. The child, who is under the age of 10, was taken to Dell Children’s Medical Center with potentially life-threatening injuries.
The accident remains under investigation. According to several media reports, an investigator with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office was allegedly involved in the accident and was placed on leave, pending the results of an investigation.
Protecting Yourself from a Pedestrian Accident
Although the accident above remains under investigation, it does show just how violent pedestrian accidents can be. Unfortunately, last year, Austin was ranked as the 24th most dangerous city for pedestrian accident fatalities.
According to the National Complete Streets Coalition (NCSC), between 2003 and 2012, the Austin and Round Rock metropolitan area had 251 pedestrian deaths. To protect yourself from being involved in a pedestrian accident, it may be a good idea to take the following safety steps:
- Always use crosswalks or sidewalks
- Pay attention to the vehicles around you
- Increase your visibility by wearing reflective clothing at night
- Follow posted signs about when and where you are allowed to walk
Sadly, no matter how many safety precautions some people take to avoid pedestrian accidents, reckless or inattentive drivers victimize them. When this occurs, our Austin injury attorneys help by providing victims with legal guidance, while making sure that all responsible parties are held liable.
