Could a Wearable Device Eliminate Warehouse Injuries?

A New York-based startup company, called Kinetic, may have found a way to prevent warehouse injuries. The company has created a device that alerts employees if they are lifting a heavy object incorrectly. Additionally, employers receive data that let them know if workers are putting themselves at risk for injuries. The hope is that this program will help in training employees to reduce workplace injuries, especially in a warehouse.

How Common Are Injuries Due to Improper Lifting?

In Liberty Mutual’s annual workplace safety index, it found that about $15 billion dollars are spent to cover the more than 100,000 types of injuries that can be caused by improper lifting in the workplace.

Kinetic and other similar businesses aiming to create innovations to reduce workplace injuries could prove beneficial to both employee and employers. Currently, workplace injuries in Texas are a clear problem, leading to a rate of 2.6 injuries per 100 full-time workers and about 500 deaths, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Workers who have been injured may be covered by Texas Workers’ Compensation. However, about 40 percent of workers are not.
