Speeding through work zones is dangerous for motorists and construction workers alike. To draw attention to the dangers, National Work Zone Awareness Week is being observed from April 23 – 27. The Texas Department of Transportation along with the Federal Highway Administration has a message for all motorists “Drive Smart and Arrive Alive.”
The campaign remembers victims and seeks to raise awareness of safety precautions that workers and motorists can take to reduce fatal car accidents in construction work areas.
In 2010, 100 Texans were killed in roadwork construction and maintenance zones, according to the TxDOT. While the number was lower than the previous year, work remains to further decrease the number of fatalities.
