The Texas Department of Transportation reports that 523 people were killed in head-on collisions in Texas in 2013.
This type of collision is arguably the most dangerous as the force of two drivers headed directly at each other creates the impact. While roughly 2 percent of crashes are head-on collisions, they make up over 10 percent of auto accident fatalities. This overrepresentation of fatalities is a clear measure of the severity of head-on collisions.
Head-on collisions generally occur due to unsafe passing, speeding, drunk driving, fatigue or losing control of a vehicle. In addition, 75 percent of these crashes occur in rural areas.
A man was killed in a head-on collision on Texas 71 near Vail Drive when a sedan and a pickup truck crashed into each other. The accident caused construction equipment to spread across the road. Two other people survived the crash with non-life threatening injuries.
Drivers who do survive these collisions often suffer fates that may seem worse than death. Common injuries among survivors in these sorts of accidents include many catastrophic injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries leading to paralysis and fractured bones.
The costs of hospital stays and rehabilitation for collision injuries can be astounding. If someone else is at fault for causing these life-altering injuries, then the victim should not have to pay.
